Asian Alcohol
Asian alcohol covers far more ground than most UK drinks aisles suggest, and this collection brings the breadth of it together: Korean soju in a dozen fruit flavours, Japanese sake and chuhai, cloudy Korean makgeolli, and the beers that belong beside the food — Tsingtao, Taiwan Beer and their fruit-flavoured siblings.
Soju is the natural starting point. The original versions here run from 16% to 20.1% alcohol and drink like a softer vodka; the fruit versions — peach, lychee, green grape, strawberry, yoghurt — come in gentler, at 12–13%, and are made for sharing over a Korean barbecue or fried chicken. Makgeolli is the older Korean tradition: lightly sparkling, milky rice wine that is lovely with pancakes — the flavoured bottles here are 3–4% alcohol.
On the Japanese side, sake runs from small tasting bottles to full-size bottles, and the canned chuhai are the easy-drinking end — lemon and grapefruit, and very refreshing. The beers do what good lager does everywhere: Tsingtao with Chinese food, a cold Taiwan Beer with anything off the grill.
